Budget, space, perception, possible faculty outrage. All of these issues conspire against promotoing leisure reading in the academic setting. The funny thing is, colleges cater to undergraduate studens on so many levels socially, it has always puzzled me as to why leisure reading is seen (if indeed it is, though I perceive it to be) as sort of , oh I don't know, anti-intellectual. Heaven forbid a biology major wants to read Ann Rice or Stephen King. There goes medical school!
